Dishwasher

Clean my dishwasher? Wait. What? You might be asking yourself, “Why do I need to clean the appliance that cleans my dishes?” The easy answer is that it comes down to efficiency. When food gets trapped near the drain and grime gets built up throughout, the dishwasher has to work harder, therefore using more energy, and worse yet, potentially shortening the lifespan of your favorite kitchen necessity. Even soap scum can build up and cause issues.

Though some experts advise monthly cleaning, most people are more likely to follow a three to four times a year schedule. It’s not as daunting as you may think, because true to form, you can let the dishwasher itself do most of the work. Simply take a close look at the drain and get rid of any obvious food left behind. The rest is a matter of two quick cycles with vinegar and baking soda, as explained by the house expert himself, Bob Vila. Click HERE for more on that.

Now you may be asking yourself the next logical question, “What about my washing machine?” Ah yes, the same deal. Laundry detergent plus multiple cycles of dirt and who knows what else can take its toll on the interior unit. With a door that is closed most of the time, mold and mildew can be an unwanted culprit. If you live in an area with hard water, the minerals don’t help any either. The vinegar and baking soda method works here as well. Those great folks at DIY Natural have a great tutorial HERE with close up pictures to help you get your clean on!

And though it doesn’t involve water, this is a good time to mention the lint filter on your dryer. Make sure you clean it out between cycles for safety and efficiency.

Here’s a bonus…clean that coffeemaker too! Fill the water compartment halfway with white vinegar and halfway with water. Place an empty paper filter and brew as normal, (just without the coffee of course). Turn the coffee maker off halfway through the cycle and let sit for a half hour. Restart the brewing process until it cycles all the way through. Repeat twice with plain water, (no vinegar), and voila, delicious and CLEAN coffee.
